This year’s MTV VMA’s were all about the women; the show was highlighted by a flawless Adele performance, a Britney Spears tribute and a nod to the late Amy Winehouse. While this night is about the music, we always expect the red (or in this case black) carpet to be just as exciting, however this time there were very few whose fashion was deserving of any moon men!
We were underwhelmed with the choices but although it was slim pickings for our “best dressed” awards, we managed to find a few favorites:
Zoe Saldana has once again made our best dressed list in a Barbara Bui number. We loved the plunging neckline and the gold outline added a little oomph to the LBD.
Maria Menounos wore a jade cocktail dress by Amanda Wakeley. Like Zoe, this dress had the interesting added details of the zippered front and double straps.
Kelly Rowland stunned in Falguni and Shane Peacock dress. We were big fans the fringed skirt and gold detail and of the popular plunging neckline.
But our favourite of the night was Beyonce, aka Jay Z’s baby mama, who wore a red Lanvin gown. While the warm colour was a great choice for her, the best part of this was her accessory: a beautiful baby bump!
There were more misses than hits so we didn’t have a hard time picking our “worst dressed”.
Katy Perry had several “costume” changes throughout the evening, all equally terrible, tacky, and quite frankly a bit odd even for her. From the cotton candy-coloured hair to the yellow cubed hat (?), we started to wonder if we were watching a children’s program. We’d love to see her in a glammed up cocktail dress next time and leave the head pieces at home.
Katie Holmes wore a Azzedine Alaia dress that may not have been terrible, but definitely more on the plain side. This dress would be great for Sunday brunch or a day at the park but we were expecting a lot more from Mrs. Cruise. If it were up to us? Throw her in a hot pink mini with nude heels.
Miley Cyrus looked incredibly uncomfortable in her Cavalli number. The shape, not so bad but the patterns were too much together and frankly it made her look a little too old.
Our last and in this case least, Nicki Minaj. If she was going for memorable, then job well done. It was no meat dress but Nicki managed to put together an outfit that had elements of Willy Wonka, Mr. Dress-Up, Toy Story and a funhouse all in one. This site has a full dissection of it.
Given the typical fun nature of the MTV VMA’s, we were very disappointed with the entire show, from the awkward script to the tasteless and boring outfits. Nonetheless, we love red carpets and are looking forward to the next event right here in Canada, the Toronto International Film Festival which R will be covering right from the scene!
Stay tuned for our full coverage on the 10 day festival!
